Life after email

Reports indicate that as a social phenomenon, email is dying out. As a technical phenomenon, spam is killing it. what's next?

I enjoy email, but it can never be as intoxicating or as intimate as a letter from a special person. Perhaps it is the impression of a thought on raw silk paper, or the musical intonations in the curvature of particular letters, words, that are so moving. It doesn't matter what is next as so much has vanished.
