"The first trip I made to orphanages turned my world upside down - so much so that had I realized the full impact of that experience I might have chosen not to go in the first place. This work began in November 2000 on a trip to Russia with Buckner Orphan Care International. I left for Russia expecting to come home with images of orphanages as desolate, lonely places filled with hopelessness. Once there I was struck by the quiet resolve in the children, and the lonely images I wanted to take suddenly seemed irrelevant. "
